Better than a liger?

This is what happens when two stuffed animals are accidentally placed inside an RNA recombination chamber.
I like to call this critter a "Bearion", or a "Liear", or sometimes even a "Beion."
No matter what you call it, it's pretty freaking awesome.

The Inside-Out Bear

One of the many mutant teddy bears I've made for my Design Studio 2 class.
Taking a $0.75 teddy bear from a thrift store and turning it inside-out produces interesting results.

Yeah, I got out of prison yesterday.

More fiddling with gouache.
Similar dimensions.
I don't like it very much.
The colors are horrible, and the composition is boring.
I hope I get better at this crap in my illustration class next semester.

More Inflatable Architecture Photographs

Here is a photograph of the structure in its original position. The clear room was originally totally empty and the bags in it were in a black room next to it that had a clear roof.

After removing all the structure's contents we deflated it and move it out to the main "nave" section of the campus for photographs and to allow students from other parts of the campus to interact with it.

This is a shot of the interior of the main black tunnel (seen on the right in the above photograph), where imperfections in the plastic manufacturing process created millions of pinholes that cast light into the interior of the room.

Ant Farm, Revisited

Here's an image that a kid with a totally crazy rotating webcam took of the inside of one of the four rooms in the inflatable structure in which Ryan Mulroney and I held our final critique for the first semester of courses in the Design MFA program at the California College of the Arts. The structure was extremely well-recieved by students and faculty alike from other departments at the school.

Type As/Of Content

[click on image for a larger version, approx 250kb]

This was the final result of the Type As/Of Content cource we had to take this semester. An 11"x17" tryptich (sp?) that was supposed to represent the place we ended up visiting for class, this was my attempt at conveying what the experience of going into the sewer was like for me. Because we were given very little concrete direction I ended up experimenting with ideas that I wanted to explore for myself, and did all the lettering in the pannels by hand and taught myself how to use clipping masks.

One of many, many layouts for this quote that I'm working on for my Typography As/Of Content course.
It's not all that creative, but I like the little guy I maked, and I'm doodling things that resemble this all the time now.
The small text you can't actually read says "–Iraqi proverb".

I'll post the weirder layouts here, but it may take a while since I need to use my scanner for my zanier ideas, and my scanner is currently non-operative since my iMac is dead. Alas.

White Rainbow II: the flyer

Well, this is the 8.5x11 flyer version of the previous poster.
I ended up adjusting this to an 11x17 format and printing that up instead of the color version since having two versions of the poster might make things "too confusing".

Personally I think the more versions of the poster there are the more likely people are to notice ONE of them and not just block them out like they do everything else that's posted everywhere, but it's not my show and it's not my decision.

B'sides, doing color prints would have been a pain in my ass, whereas doing black and white laser prints took about 3 minutes.

White Rainbow 2

Poster done for show opening in one of the on-campus galleries on Friday.

Unfortunately the artist doesn't like the font I chose for "WHITE RAINBOW II", which does't make a lot of sense to me since he said he wanted something that was both new-age and "has the sensibility of a Greatful Dead poster".

I mean, clouds = new age
Whacky font + neon colors = Greatful Dead poster.
WTF?

He also only seems to like the B&W flyer I designed, which was a throwaway piece of poo that I made by ripping a lot of the stuff from this and changing the format a bit. So we'll probably not end up using this at all, which has me a bit vexed since I like it.

Still, I guess it can go in the portfolio anyway.

PS: Doodles and photograph mine, non-Rosewood text set using movable rubber type and then scanned and resized as appropriate. Movable rubber type = my new favorite toy.

Elephant Doodle

I submitted a second t-shirt design to threadless.com today. It hasn't been accepted yet and I'm not sure when they're going to start their next round of scoring, but believe me I'll post the link to the shirt as soon as/if it gets accepted.

threadless.com

Because I am a totally unoriginal person I decided to copy [info]tingsquared and post a t-shirt design to threadless.com

I went to the Craft Center around the middle of last week and printed this design on some canvas squares and stretched it over 10"x10" frames. I'd post photographs of the prints on here, but my little brother borrowed my digital camera for a trip to Europe and they don't fit on my scanner very well.

The prints look pretty good, and I figured that as long as I already have a printable design sitting around I might as well see if this company would like to put it onto a t-shirt for me.

My Threadless.com Submission

If you have the time please open an account at the site, find my t-shirt design, and then click on the "I'd Buy This" button and give it a score of 4 or 5. According to the help section clicking on the "I'd Buy This" button doesn't mean you will ever have to actually buy the t-shirt, it's really just like voting a 6 instead of just a 5 and it makes them more likely to print the design.

Look Kids! It's Gary the Gator!

I got really, really plastered last night and drew this little guy on my hand.

Isn't he cute?

Mousey Skulls

I've been really frustrated with my artistic abilities as of late, and virtually everything I draw ends up crumpled in a wastebasket or deleted out of annoyance.

Today I made a new background for my main livejournal but of course I can't seem to figure out how to easily change my entry colors (i refuse to learn anything other than the most basic livejournal-specific coding techniques) so I'm getting frustrated with it again.

Troubled though my design change may be, I like the background. Here's a swatch of it for you to view or use. HOORAY!

PS: If this seems "Hot Topic-ey" it's because I was looking at belt buckles on their site recently. While I hate the chain and the majority of their products, these Nintento controller belt buckes are wicked sweet.
